Abstract: Bathrooms are getting bigger and more luxurious.

According to the 2023 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, about 1 in 5 homeowners are expanding their bathrooms, and they're spending about 50 percent more on bathroom remodels than they did last year. The home remodeling and design platform surveyed more than 1,900 users.

Homeowners seeking more spacious bathrooms often steal extra square footage from wardrobes, bedrooms and hallways, or do so through additions. Almost three out of every five bathrooms are more than 100 square feet when the renovation is complete.

Marine Sargsyan, Houzz's economist, said in a statement, "Bathrooms are an ongoing focus for homeowners who want to update the style and functionality of their rooms. They continue to invest in improving their bathrooms out of necessity and future needs."

The report shows that people spent a median of $13,500 on redoing their master bathrooms this year, up from $9,000 last year. The larger the bathroom, the higher the price tag - about $25,000 for a 100-square-foot or larger bathroom.

More than one-third of homeowners are remodelling their bathrooms because they are old or damaged.

Sargsyan says, "This is due in part to the fact that most homes are more than 40 years old, and older homes tend to have less space."

As a result, homeowners are undertaking these projects to not only make their bathrooms functional, but also to turn them into sanctuaries where they can rest and relax.

Nearly two-thirds of homeowners are looking for more shower space. The most popular styles are low-level showers, alcove showers, curbless showers and corner showers.

For aging homeowners, people who use wheelchairs or walkers, or those who are concerned about slipping, low and curbless showers may make these spaces more accessible.

People are inclined to dress up a shower if they have spent that much money on a new one. Rain showers are one of the most popular showers, followed by double showers (for a more spa-like experience), body showers and thermostatic mixers, the latter of which ensure the perfect water temperature.

Around a third of people also choose to install non-slip flooring outside their shower. Other popular flooring options are waterproof flooring and radiant heated flooring.

They are also looking for more innovative colour schemes in these bathrooms. Wooden vanities are more popular than white vanities, but white is still the dominant colour for bathroom countertops and walls.

Homeowners also opted for more environmentally friendly remodelling options. Many are opting for LED bulbs (which last longer and are more energy efficient than traditional bulbs), water-saving fixtures, and other energy-efficient amenities to save money and the environment.

They are also increasingly prioritising universal design in their remodelling, which will make it easier for them to age in their homes.

The needs of aging family members remain a top priority, but half of homeowners are actually planning for the future while meeting those needs," Sargsyan said. This reinforces our understanding that homeowners want to live in their homes for the long term."
